5 Tips to Make Every Day a Great Curl Day
Curls, like life, can be so unpredictable. Much time doesn’t pass by without us hearing someone say “my curls look great one day, and then the next not so much” or “I can never get it to look the same”. I get it. Deep down, I think having curls is one of life’s gentle reminders that we really aren’t in control of as much as we think we are. That’s ok. Here are a few tips to ensure that each day is a great curl day for you.
1. Start with a great set.
On wash day, be sure you are cleansing your scalp well, conditioning, and styling with intention. Yes, with intention. Apply your styling products in sections. For those of you with more dense hair, you’ve got to take smaller sections to ensure that each strand has some product on it. When you take shortcuts with your wash day, it will inevitably affect your style and its longevity.
2. Make sure your hair is fully dry before touching it.
Obviously this doesn’t apply to diffusing, as you will inevitably touch your hair during this process. I’m referring to days when you are air drying. Don’t scrunch or fluff your hair while wet. It will only cause extra unnecessary frizz. Wait until your hair is completely dry to start touching it
3. Keep your hair hydrated!
Color treated hair, as well as winter hair needs extra moisture. Because we can’t pull it out of the sky, literally, we need to add some in. Once a week after your regular wash and conditioning, put on your favorite deep conditioner for at least 20 minutes to get some of that moisture back in.
4. Wear a silk scarf or bonnet to bed.
Going to bed without your hair being covered can definitely affect your next-day hair. Wearing a silk scarf or bonnet helps trap some of the moisture in, as well as prevents your hair from snagging on your cotton or nylon pillowcase. Don’t like your hair tied up at night? Me either! Get yourself a silk pillowcase to allow your curls to move around freely at night.
5. Refresh
Let’s be honest. Washing your hair every day isn't’ fun, nor is it efficient with our fast-paced everyday lives. That’s where refreshing comes in. In the morning after taking off your scarf or bonnet, lightly spray down each section with a water/gel mixture (50/50 is a good mix), lightly scrunch and go. Another tip that works for me is once my shower is over, I take some water and put it on my hands and scrunch that into my hair. It reactivates the gel I already have in my hair, and the steam from the shower helps as well.
